Join us each day as we bring you the stories of iconic and soon-to-be-famous feminist change-makers. Women are warriors. We have always been warriors, and we will always be warriors. Today, many of us fight to create a society that treats all people with respect—regardless of their beliefs, background or economic status.

One thing that helps us stay strong is when we hear stories about women warriors from the past who fought for equality and succeeded. I want to share a story with you about one of those women. You have probably never heard of her. She lived in what is now northwest India back in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Her bravery helped protect one of the most egalitarian societies ever created. Before I can share her story, first I need to give you some background.

Hundreds of years ago, the countries that are now India, Pakistan and Afghanistan suffered under a fanatical, oppressive regime known as the Mughal Empire. They were dark times. In the midst of this oppression, a spiritual-social movement began that taught empowerment of women, equality of all people and freedom of religion.

They did several clever things leading up to and during the battle: They positioned themselves in front of the Khidrana reservoir, the only source of water for miles around, and defended it viciously. She is depicted here not just wearing the traditional Khalsa clothing, but that of the Nihang, an elite warrior Khalsa sect.

This outfit includes a variety of bladed weapons the Guru was known to have five weapons on him at all times , electric blue robes, steel-wrapped turbans, and steel bangles about the wrist.

I am unsure if she was technically Nihang, but for damn sure she had their spirit. And yes, she is decapitating that guy. Follow the trail of dust to see the arc of her sword. Lastly: the Mughal being beheaded has period-accurate clothing, although his helmet is one of an infantryman and his outfit is that of a cavalryman. I wanted to be able to see his face. One such great warrior was Mai Bhago, also known as Mata Bhag Kaur, who became immortalized in Sikh history, after she led a group of 40 Sikh warriors, against the 10, strong Mughal army in the Battle of Muktsar in Mai Bhago persuaded 40 Sikh warriors from her village to return to the battlefield.

What we do know is that she was the only daughter of a prominent landowner named Bhai Mallo Shah, from Jhabal Kalan village in the present day district of Amritsar in Punjab. Her parents were staunch Sikhs, and would frequently take her to Anandpur, where Guru Gobind Singh resided.

Alarmed by the rising power of the Sikhs, the Mughals aided by the Pahadi hill Rajas of Himachal had launched a joint attack on Anandpur, the seat of the Sikh Guru. Mai Bhago, on hearing of this, berated these men and persuaded them to return to the battlefield.

Meanwhile, in Anandpur, there was turmoil. Guru Gobind Singh had evacuated the besieged citadel on the promise that his men would get a safe exit, but in the confusion that followed, a large number of his followers and well as his sons were killed. With just a handful of surviving followers, Guru Gobind Singh took up position on a hillock overlooking a pond in the Khidrana village of Ferozepur district of Punjab. Here, he was joined by Mai Bhago , who was leading the band of 40 men.
