Germany is a very efficient country to visit. Trains and buses are reliable and run like clockwork. The cities are very clean and modern and the facilities are comfortable. Italy, particularly as you head south, may feel a little more rough around the edges. Even so, the tourist infrastructure in Italy is well organized and you're unlikely to have any real hiccups during your travels.
Italy Prices. Germany Prices. Average Daily Cost Per person, per day. Accommodation Hotel or hostel for one person. Accommodation Typical double-occupancy room. Food Meals for one day. On the other hand, persons who have stayed or transited through the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, including Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Island, are required to present a negative COVID test result carried within 48 hours before arrival and stay self-isolated for five days. Based on the current rules that Italy has, travellers reaching Italy from one of the above-mentioned countries must fill in the passenger locator form, undergo COVID testing within 72 hours before reaching the country, and show a Digital COVID Certificate or an equivalent document.
However, it should be noted that special rules apply to persons who have stayed or transited through the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, including Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Island. This group of people are required to present a negative COVID test result carried within 48 hours before arrival. Travellers who fail to meet these requirements must stay self-isolated for a period of five days after entering Italy.
Travellers from Japan, Canada, and the United States can also enter Italy under the same restrictions. They are required to present a passenger locator form, a negative test result taken within 72 hours one of the following EU Digital COVID certificates:. Arrivals from European countries that are allowed entry must present a negative PCR test result carried out within 72 hours of their arrival and fill in a self-declaration form.
They are also required to report to the local authorities about their arrival. The same rules apply to Israel and the UK arrivals, though with a test taken 48 hours before arrival.
Arrivals from any country that is permitted entry are exempt from the self-isolation requirement. After that, they must quarantine for 14 days and undergo another test at the end of the quarantine period. This is mostly a place for beaches, outdoor activities, and water sports.
The rocky mountainside of Aspromonte National Park in Calabria has the abandoned ghost town of Pentedattilo and a wild untouched landscape that is well worth visiting too. This city is probably the most diverse in Europe, and as a result of the mixing pot of cultures, religions, and nationalities here, a lively and exciting art, music, and food scene has popped up. Of course, the Berlin Wall remains a major draw for tourists visiting the city, and a trip to the barrier that used to divide Germany is well worth it.
Visiting the wall is free, but you can take guided tours for just a few euros — well worth it for history buffs. In Bavaria, beautiful Regensburg is known for its stunning m long 13th century stone bridge and the medieval buildings that surround it. Much of the old city remains intact — unlike many other German cities due to the bombing raids in WW2 — and a stroll down the riverside in the city is very special.
The traditional beer gardens that line the river are a hotspot for tourists and locals alike, and serve up generous sized portions of food alongside ice cold Bavarian beer. Further west is Heidelberg , a cobblestoned lined city that is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the country. The city has been the home of philosophers and writers for centuries, and inspired many — like Mark Twain — to pen some of their greatest work.
The red sandstone Heidelberg Castle looms above the city and is worth visiting for the view of the city alone. Rothenburg is one of our favourites, and indeed parts of the town were used for scenes from Harry Potter due to the perfectly preserved ancient walls and buildings here. An asteroid strike millions of years ago compressed stone near the town and produced rock studded with impact diamonds.
Cimb the tower of St. City breaks to Italy are popular throughout Europe due to the cosmopolitan feel, and perfect mix between old and modern. Bologna is a gorgeous medieval city in north Italy that has thrived with a steady flow of students that has kept this city a vibrant place to visit. Face the tourists and head to Venice , but take your time strolling its hidden side streets, canals, piazzas and local shops and cafes. Or take a boat to see the colorful island of Burano.
Its streets are perfect for wandering to discover its hidden piazzas, beautifully detailed buildings and churches including the baroque Santa Croce. Day trips include the lovely seaside towns of Otranto and Gallipoli for moreish local flavors. The main sights include the majestic Sforza Castle , the incredibly detailed Duomo where you can climb up onto the roof and the ornate Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II — a shopping center with beautiful mosaics and designer stores.
I would say go to Germany. See as much as you can I do not find Italy to be more expensive than Germany, but I guess I re-adjust my spending I usually travel as cheaply as I can, so I do not stay in expensive hotels, nor do I eat big, expensive meals.
I almost always have a car and do lots of car picnics. I would rather see Italy and cut out a few days if I had to then to go see Germany again simply because it might be cheaper. I guess I don't look at the Italians as 'not caring' about tourists problems I try to embrace as much of the Italian lifestyle as possible when I am there Italy makes me smile:. As others have mentioned, I also haven't found Italy to be more expensive than Germany.
A few things might be cheaper, but overall it all balances out. Since you haven't yet been there, I'd definitely suggest going to Italy this time. I suspect your costs might be less than predicted. If you're using a Guidebook to plan your travels, that will provide lots of information on good, reasonably priced hotels and other ways to save money.
Am planning my 4th trip to Europe for Sept, and back to Italy I always manage to get it into our trips. It is an amazing country, Venice is a totally gorgeous place I will say we only had a few days in Germany, and tho I would like to return, Italy and France just keep pulling me back. I also like Italy but if you have to go in June,July or august it might be better to go to Germany as it can be very hot and crowded in Italy.
Spring and fall Italy is great. In Varenna on Lake Como, there are several doubles listed at euros, and a couple of cheaper options. You don't need to live "high on the hog" to have a great experience of these areas. I always start by circling all the cheapest options in each chapter and have found Rick's listings to describe the pluses and minuses pretty accurately.
Thank you everyone for the comments. We have decided on Italy and are heading in first part of October! Plan right now is Venice, Verona, and Tuscany. Debating on if we will have enough time to add Lake Como or Cinque Terre.
