Cangiani: I have a T. Plan for Topeka, in which I consider an important overview of the city and it entails Transparency, Opportunity, Public Safety and Services to be key points of the city.
Transparency: My focus: Financial accountability to help us build the future together. I plan to: Promote and improve transparency of our city budgets by holding public hearings and stakeholder meetings with more precise data; evaluate tax rates and explore long-range plans to help seniors on a fixed income.
Opportunity: My focus: Connecting our citizens and organizations to resources, building partnerships that benefit everyone. I plan to: Create a central hub for connecting partners to the resources they need; reevaluate regulations for businesses and homeowners. I plan to: Encourage neighborhood-level initiatives and promote community character building programs; Call on city leadership to shift its emphasis to sustainable development and delivery of city projects.
My service has given me the unique insight into many inner neighborhood communities. I co-founded the Safe Streets, a citizen volunteer organization to work with other citizens to positively impact their lives. My time on the council has increased that opportunity 50 fold.
My work on the council has been productive with my fellow council members and I very much want to continue that work as the Mayor of Topeka. Cangiani: Topeka is my home, our home.
I want to take care of it. Ever since I moved to Topeka in , Topeka has been considered my home. Washburn University was one of the main reasons for my move to this city. After integration into the community and its people, it became home to me. As mayor, I could bring a new perspective to the table as a political outsider but invested community member.
In a mayoral role I can provide focus and direction, while also listening and transmitting the views of concerned citizens. We need leaders who share our values of Community, Family, Freedom, and Financial efficiency. I have heard so many stories of roads that could be better paved, neighborhoods that could be safer, and junky properties that need to be cleaned up.
Padilla: As stated above, I know this city. I have worked literally in every part of Topeka. I know many of the challenges that face our diverse population. I have been face to face and interacted with the very wealthy and those who are not. I have verifiable track record of how I have reached out and engaged and partnered with many problem solvers in our community.
There is no learning curve, I will not have to catch up. De La Isla said she will remain in Topeka. De La Isla said she hopes the city will approve funding the housing trust fund before she leaves office. She also said she feels the city is in a good position for continuing recovery from the pandemic, and asked the public to support whomever the new mayor will be.
De La Isla declined to say who she might endorse to become the next mayor, but said the person needs to have humility. They have to be willing to be outside of their comfort zone. She has served Topeka nearly a decade as an elected official, know her service is not done, will just be different. De La Isla recalled work on a variety of large issues over the past several years, including Momentum and issues surrounding diversity and inclusion.
She thanked her friends, family, colleagues, and voters. In , she became Executive Director of Topeka Habitat for Humanity where she established the first office, the ReStore and exponentially increased service delivery. She also helped launch an annual girls empowerment conference at Washburn University where more than Topeka girls attend.
